Giuseppe Savarè of the Department of Decision Sciences has been awarded a prestigious Eurepean Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant for his project OPTiMiSE — Optimal Transport and Metric Structures for Evolution Problems.

The five-year project, hosted at the Bocconi Institute for Data Science and Analytics (BIDSA), aims to explore how geometry and variational principles can offer new keys to understanding the evolution of complex systems.

By combining innovative mathematical tools, OPTiMiSE aims to address some of the most relevant open problems in contemporary mathematics, while opening up new directions for applicable research in fields ranging from physics to data science
